Code Your Own Retro Game with Python (ages 12-16)

This beginners workshop teaches 12-16 year olds to learn how to code in the programming language Python. Participants will be introduced to programming with Python and how to use it to create a game. We will cover the basics of computer programming and start by creating a text-based adventure game. By the end of the week, we will have made a retro 8-bit style platform video game.

Please bring a laptop with you which has the Python 3 already installed. The installer is available from the Python website.

The workshop will be structured as such:

Day 1:
Daily goal: learn basics of Python and programming
• How to use the interactive shell and run Python scripts
• Variables
• Repeating events and making decisions in code

Day 2:
Daily goal: write text-based adventure game
• How to design a game
• Handling keyboard input

Day 3:
Daily goal: displaying graphics
• Working with Tkinter
• Different types of image files

Day 4:
Daily goal: start making 8-bit game
• Detecting two objects colliding or touching
• Moving a character

Day 5:
Daily goal: finish making 8-bit game
• Make game fully interactive
• Customise graphics
